¿Por qué Bécquer?

El lector se preguntará por qué de entre tantos poetas que ofrece la

literaratura española, escogí a Bécquer. Pues bien, Bécquer, aunque no sea uno de los

más conocidos, ocupa un sitio bastante relevante en cuanto poeta de transición, tras los

grandes románticos europeos y antes de la llegada del Modernismo.

Byron fue fuente de inspiración, como se verá en las Rimas

XIII y XIV, como también lo fue la literatura del Siglo de

Oro, y en particular a Quevedo en la Rima LXXXI (me

refiero a "Cerrar podrá mis ojos...") o la influencia de Dante en las Rimas

XXIX y XXXII, o

Leopardi. También hace referencia a "la noche oscura del alma" en la Rima LXII, al Hamlet de Shakespeare en la Rima VI.

Bécquer supo reunir todos estos elementos externos para crear una poesía muy

personal, que ya pone unos fundamentos que luego los modernistas usarán transformándolo

en algo totalmente nuevo.

Además de "poeta de los poetas", se podría añadir que Bécquer es

"el poeta de los ojos", ya que en muchas Rimas,

especialmente XII - XXXIV

habla casi exclusivamente, de manera casi obsesiva de los ojos de la amada...

Ya voy a dejar que sea el lector que disfrute de los poemas y que haga él una

opinión acerca del poeta y de su sufrida obra.

Why Bécquer ?

The reader will wonder why among the many poets that Spanish Literature offers, I have

chosen Bécquer. Apart from being a little-known poet, Bécquer, is a relevant poet

insomuch it marks a transition period. He is placed right after the great European

Romantics and before the budding

of the Modernist current.

Byron was a source of inspiration, as one can notice in Rimas

XIII y XIV. Golden Age literature, and especially Quevedo's

metaphysical poems as one can notice in Rima LXXXI (I

am particularly thinking of Quevedo's "Cerrar podrá mis ojos...") . Or

Dante's influence in Rimas XXIX y XXXII,

and Leopardi, for instance. There are also references to "la noche

oscura del alma" in Rima LXII, or to Hamlet

in Rima VI.

Bécquer was able to make out of all these external factors a very personal writing,

shaping a type of language which will be later used and completely transformed by the

Modernists, who will make of it something totally new.

Bécquer, said to be the "poets' poet", could also be defined

as "the poets of the eyes", since in many of his Rimas, and especially XII - XXXIV , he speaks almost

exclusively, in an almost obsessive way, of the eyes of the beloved...

Now I' ll leave it up to the reader to enjoy his poems and then make up his mind on

the poet and his tormented works.
